The Governor is prepared subject of course, to our, agreesent, to go to the legislature for the annual grant, which involves a oubstantial increase over the provision of 2455,000 included in the 1947-48 estimton for the liong Kong University, but he has expressed the view that the capital grant should come from United Kingdom funds, and has esked that this may be considered.
According to the Beport of the Nong ang University Advisory Coɛraittoe (paragraph 9 on page 6), the buildings were severely but not irreparably damped, and almost all equip:cut and fittings were destroyed or locted. The Governor' figure of Sh million, which is equivalent to €250,000 10, hoverer, very ruch in excess, of the Committee's eatinate for the repair of buildingo and equipment, which was $315,000 (see page 73 of the kesort). The Comittee, however, say in paragraph 66 on page 23 that for the purpose of their estimates they worked on the basis of an increase of 75% over 1941 costa. The notasl incressed cost
is, of course, very ragh higher, and this, no doubt, explains the discrepancy between the Committee's estimate - £116,000 and the Governor'e figure of $250,000.
